Review: TouchViz VJ App For iPad

I've looked at VJ apps for iOS before, however since the arrival of my new iPad I've been eager to try out TouchViz the slick looking VJ app from Hexler (the guys behind TouchOSC). I've written a full review on DigitalDJTips, in summary though; the app is great, incorporating camera shots into a video mix, good clip organisation/preview area and a decent selection of FX. No video scratching/scrubbing or cue points, but VJ apps are slowly playing catchup with the DJ offerings.

Review: Stereomusik Systems Output Boosters

It's always nice to write an article that gets lots of interest, one way or another...I reviewed the high quality Output Boosters from Stereomusik Systems, who developed the first iOS DJ splitter cable several years ago. Reviewing such a small component was a challenge and the comments thread following the article is possibly more revealing than my review!

PS - Thanks to Gabor from Stereomusik Systems for stepping in to answer the more technical questions!

4 iOS Tools To Give You An Unfair Advantage In The DJ Booth

Tuesday's article from last week saw me looking at some apps which maybe useful for a DJ, including;

  • DJ Tempo
  • DJ Tools
  • BPM Counter
  • Flail
I'd probably find myself using DJ Tempo and DJ Tools most, especially with the planned update to DJ Tools coming soon. However, Flail is a fun app and offers more than simple bpm / harmonic key testing, it has a whole bunch of adjustable presets so you could use it as a synth.

Review: Cross DJ For iPad

The new app from MixVibes, CrossDJ for iPad gets a thorough review and test. It's iPad2 and upwards only, so bad news for iPad 1 owners...however there will be an iPhone version out later in the year - presumably based on the success of the iPad version. There are features (such as key lock, midi functionality and storable loop points) missing, but it is a very good start for version 1.0 of an app.

Review: Meta.DJ for iPad

Following on from the DJ Remixer 2 review, I took a look at meta.DJ an app I'd had installed since it was released and never really got to grips with. After a number of major updates, the app is much more stable and offers a lot more features. One reader descibed it as "a jack of all trades, master of none" which seemed pretty accurate...but perhaps that's what you need sometimes.

What To Look For In An iPad, iPhone Or iPod Touch DJ App

Another article, this time not a review but a lengthy discussion about features we'd like to see in our DJ apps on iOS. The features range from the simple ones which you'd expect, to the more advanced which perhaps you'd pay for with in-App purchases. What struck me was how far development has come on iOS in the space of 2 years, when I started writing about DJing on iOS there was no talk of social network interaction with apps and the idea of key lock in iOS was still very much in development.

Review: DJ Remixer 2 App For iPad

With the release of Mashup by MixedInKey, it seemed only natural to take a look at similar functionality in iOS. Strangely DJ Remixer 2 was released about the same time and allows you to split tracks in your Music Library into lots of tiny looped segments.

4 Clever Gadgets For iOS DJs

The next article was a round-up of new(ish) accessories for iOS devices, covering most budgets. The output booster connectors from Stereomusik Systems are briefly mentioned here, I'll be doing a proper review of these soon!

How To Record Your DJ Set On An iPhone

Another flurry of activity from me...again just a simple echo-chamber of what I've written on digitaldjtips. The first article stems from a common question, "How can I record my DJ set on my iPhone?"...the answer isn't as simple as you'd hope and requires investment in probably a Blue Mikey connector.
